50 km trail nutrition set
This set combines carbohydrate, electrolyte, caffeinated and recovery products for a 50 km mountain trail race.
The plan is based on an average runner. If you expect to be significantly faster or slower, use our nutrition calculator and adapt the quantities to your likely time on course.
Trail-running nutrition plan
- During the one or two days before the race, the source suggests 3–5 g of carbohydrate per kilogram of body mass. On race day, eat 1–3 g/kg two to three hours before the start.
- Avoid an unusually high-fibre breakfast.
- Drink at aid stations. The source suggests at least 500 ml of fluid per hour, but individual needs vary with sweat rate, weather, pace and body size.
- From approximately 30 minutes into the race, target around 60 g of carbohydrate per hour. Standard SiS gels provide about 22 g, while SiS BETA Fuel Gel provides 40 g.
- Practise your long-distance running nutrition in training.
- After the race, eat a complete meal with protein, carbohydrate, fruit and vegetables.
